Review: Fishing Line

I review Bass Pro Shops Excel Line and Berkley XL Trilene. The Excel has bad line memory and digs into itself, but only costs $11 for 1000+ yards. However, the Trilene is one of the best monofilament lines i have ever used and is $20 for a 1000 yard spool. The 660 yard spool is $6, but only comes in 6 and 8 ib test.

i have a question….. i got a trilene big game 12lb 1175 yd spool and i have to rods… one needs 120 yd and the other needs 260 yd….. do i have to guess how much line to put on the rod….. or is there a tip u can give me??? plzz help

TheMeishi says:

for normal mono, try suffix

GameFish Productions says:

For crankbaits, I usually like flurocarbon, helps keep the bait submerged deeper, and is nice for clear water. Most times it also is thinner than most monofilaments. Seaguar makes their Red Label line of Fluro, and its about $10 for a spool of 200yds, its more affordable than their invisx or abrasx, and its good stuff. I use their 15LB for my pike rod.

GameFish Productions says:

For crankbaits I like a thinner line like 10lb-14lb, but with fluorocarbon, the line is thinner than its mono counterpart, so you can get a 14lb test line in the diameter of 12lb, or 12lb in the diameter 10lb. Either way, I would prefer the 14lb for pike. I just like the extra strength in case you get a monster, Its saved me a couple times.

Jared Long says:

I use p-line flouroclear its cheap and is just great you should give it a try.

TheMeishi says:

what was the temperature when the line had terrible memory?

FishingAlberta says:

Okay Thanks! Gives me more cofindence on the line. I’ll try it when I’m done with my Sufix Fluro. Should I get the 12 lb. for Walleye and Pike? I use leaders for Pike.

RussianSpetsnaz0123 says:

I dont understand why everyone sports braid mono is just as good mono all day

FishingAlberta says:

It’s alright bro! Just tell me what you like and I’ll but a spool of it to try. I won’t get mad at you or anything. lol I’m still on a quest to find the best line, so it means I’ve got to try all the kinds people say are good, so will you still help me?

FishingAlberta says:

Alright! Thanks for your help! Do you think it will have better abrasion than 12 lb.?

FishingAlberta says:

Alright Thanks! You’ve helped me a lot! Thanks again! Good luck on the water!

FishingAlberta says:

okay, thanks. but i think 14 lb. will sink faster than 12 lb. right?

daniel gomes says:

Sun line is the best flourorcarbon on the market

simon horn says:

Seaguar Red Label.

FishingAlberta says:

How good is the abrasion resistant of the XL? And Have you tried the xl armour coated? if you have is it better than normal xl?

FishingAlberta says:

Got another question. What is your favorite brand of line?

GameFish Productions says:

I haven’t any problems with it being to stiff or memory issues. I use the 8lb for my plastics spinning rod with no memory issues. I usually spool the line, and let it sit on the reel for a day or 2. After that I usually don’t have any issues with memory. As for stiffness, its not really stiff, I’d say the line is in between Trilene XT and XL, but not bad. For $10, it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot, but if you wanna see what true Fluorocarbon is like, Invisx or Sunline Super Fluorocarbon are good

FishingAlberta says:

oh really? So 14 lb. will sink not as fast as 12 lb.? I see, makes sense since it’s thicker but I’m afraid Walleye might be able to see it. Will they?

GameFish Productions says:

Most likely no, Walleye are a weird fish, either their very finicky and don’t wanna bite unless its right in their face, or they will just smash your lure. Most people use fluorocarbon as leaders for walleye, so the chances they see it are slim to none

Tyler Black says:

I also use pline fluro clear its amazing on my baitcaster. Casts really good and the strength is fantastic! I run it in the 10lb test. There is little to no memory. Give it a try you’ll love it! I also use stren high impact on my other baitcaster and its really good stuff for the price in 10 lb test. I hear cabellas ripcord Si line was amazing I really want to try it out!!

GameFish Productions says:

Nope other way around, the thinner the line, the faster it sinks, thats why most pros use 12lb or 10lb for cranking

FishingAlberta says:

Thanks! I mostly fish for Walleye and Pike (With Wire Leaders) so should I move up to 14 lb. test? I don’t want the line to affect too much action on my crankbaits. And Big game is a bit too thick for me and I don’t like the memory.

paintballer198k says:

the coils in the line when casting

FishingAlberta says:

I hate the xt. i got the 14 lb. test and it has more memory than your 17 lb. test excel mono. And I fish a lot of weedy areas with a rocky bottom, but I use crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and topwater most of the time so will 12 lb. xl work for my baitcaster? Or should I get the excel 12 lb. or armor coated 12 lb.?

GameFish Productions says:

For Fluorocarbon, Go for either Seaguar Invisx, or Sunline Super Fluorocarbon, Both are very nice

Emanuel Herrera says:

what is memory? i have just started fining.

FishingAlberta says:

The reviews on it aren’t too good. Most of them are saying that it’s too stiff and lots of memory. Is it true?

ben huynh says:

This guy is good…. at least he is not sporting his braid….like other people

FishingAlberta says:

Okay Thanks. When i’m done with my fluoro I already have I’ll get some Red Label 14 lb. to try.

Landon Zell says:

I would not suggest Berkley Vanish…it sucks!!!!!!!!

TackleJunky81 says:

I have been using Excel for years and its great line and i use there 20lb line alot and i have not had any memory problems with it. If you are u may be putting the line on wrong and all line is gonna have some memory but thats why you condititon the line and it really helps. Im not puttin down your review, this is just my opinion. I have had really good luck this year with Seaguar InvizX. Its alittle pricey but it works great!!!
