How to Make a Super Effective Float Rig for Spanish Mackerel

Here is a detailed tutorial where I walk you through step by step, how to make a cork rig for spanish mackerel. The float rig is super effective in the surf, off a pier and when boat fishing. The ability to quickly adjust the depths make it great for all applications. In the video, I show you how to add a bobber stop to your mainline, I then go through the progressions of adding the cork, the sinker, swivel, leader and finally a long shank hook. The long shank hook really helps prevent bite offs, I recommend using lighter leader in the range of 30 lbs to help increase strike ratios. I like action too but I hate losing and retying rigs and hooks. On smaller spanish your rig will work fine, the bigger 3-8 pounders will snip off 30 lb mono or fluoro like a pair of scissors more often than not even with a long shank hook. Live chum them and a short piece of thirty pound wire won’t reduce the number of strikes but will increase landings ten fold. If bluefish are present, they will strike your cork, lead and whatever other terminal tackle you have on the line when you hook a fish.

Hello from Spain,
Very nice video. Like!
What size of hook do you usually use for mackerel fishing?
Have you ever used circle hooks under a float for mackerel fishing?
Thank you very much and keep it up.

Cool video however it seems like it is a bit to late as most of the Spanish Mackerel have already migrated out of our area for the season. I will give it a go next round with your great tutorial.

Intresting rig
What kind of bait
You recommend for the spanish macarel ?

I haven’t used the bobber stoppers, but I use split shots on top of the float. Kinda has the same effect I guess. Here’s one you are sure to like. Next time you use a knocker rig, add a split shot between the hook and sinker. Now you have an adjustable knocker rig Captain. Works great for making quick mutton long leader rigs, without swivels. Tight Lines Captain. .
